The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) is set to deepen its partnership with Adamawa State University (ADSU), Mubi, in areas of mutual interest aimed at enhancing early warning systems and climate resilience across Adamawa State.

This commitment was reaffirmed by the Director.General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, and Permanent Representative of Nigeria with the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), Professor Charles Anosike, during a courtesy visit by the Vice-Chancellor of ADSU, Professor Augustine Clement, on Tuesday, 29th July 2025, at NiMet Headquarters in Abuja.

In his remarks, Anosike emphasised the critical importance of meteorological data in supporting early warning systems and disaster risk reduction, particularly within agrarian communities located near major hydrological structures such as the Kiri Dam. 

“The geographical positioning of Adamawa State University within an agrarian corridor and in close proximity to critical hydrological infrastructure presents a strategic opportunity for collaboration in meteorological observation, climate research, downscaling of seasonal climate prediction and capacity-building initiatives”, he noted.

He further expressed NiMet’s readiness to support the university in establishing a functional weather station, facilitating academic exchange programmes, and promoting joint research that contributes to sustainable development and disaster preparedness in the region.

“We will formalise this collaboration through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), with clear expectations on station maintenance, data generation, and transmission. It is vital that the university actively engages its surrounding communities to leverage the benefits of this partnership fully”, Anosike added.

In response, the Vice Chancellor of ADSU, Professor Augustine Clement, commended NiMet for its pivotal role in national development and reaffirmed school’s commitment to advancing research that promotes environmental sustainability and enhances climate resilience, particularly in flood-prone areas of the state.
