The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), in strategic partnership with Interferry, the global ferry association with consultative status at the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has unveiled Africa’s first-ever Ferry Safety Development and Mentoring Programme, a landmark initiative designed to redefine safety standards and operational excellence across the continent’s ferry sector.

A statement from LASWA explained that the 18-month intensive programme will provide participants with direct mentorship from leading Interferry experts, alongside facilitators drawn from top maritime institutions, industry-leading companies, and regulatory bodies across Nigeria.

It further explained that following a rigorous intake verification process concluded on March 18, 2026, only candidates who met strict eligibility and professional benchmarks were selected for the programme.

“A total of 50 participants—including ferry captains, deckhands, marine engineers and technicians, safety officers, compliance professionals, and fleet managers will undergo comprehensive training.

“The curriculum covers critical areas such as ferry design and construction, safety management systems, maritime regulations, and both preventive and predictive maintenance techniques.

“Structured as a hybrid learning experience, the programme combines self-paced online modules, virtual mentoring sessions, and monthly hands-on practical training. Activities are scheduled to commence in May 2026”, the statement read in part.

The launch scheduled for Wednesday, May 6, at the LASWA Head Office, Ikoyi, Lagos will feature detailed programme briefings, introduction of mentors and participants, and a strategic stakeholder engagement session.

This pioneering initiative reinforces the Lagos State Government’s commitment to enhancing waterway safety while building a highly skilled, globally competitive ferry transportation workforce.
